Grand Bassin is a crater lake, situated 550m above sea level, on the southwest coast of the island. However, to the local hindus, it is a known as the Ganga Taloa, a holy place representing the River Ganges of India. Peacefully nestled amidst a calm, peaceful and spiritual atmosphere, the holy lake is surrounded by numerous shrines, temples and deities. Ganga Talao is also guarded by two impressive statues of Shiva and Durga, each culminating to 33m high. The Grand Bassin holy lake is first of all a prayer place and is open at all times. There are no gates, so you can stop anytime.
Entrance is free. You can do a donation on the spot or bring some fruits as an offering to the Gods.
It is open at all times for visit. However, it is better to visit the holy lake while on a tour as there are several other great sites to visit around.
It is a sacred place. Cover your shoulders and legs. Avoid shorts and open tops. Always good to have a pashmina to cover your shoulders.
The statues are said to be the highest. The statue of Shiva is 33m and Durga is 33m high. They can both be seen from far and are certainly spectacular.
Mahashivaratree is a religious festival, celebrated in honour of Lord Shiva, every year. It normally is in March, the date changes depending on the Indian year calendar.
